Hello Tesla friends,
Following a few questions from customers we created a Tesla charging cable that can be used by US versions of the model S and model X to charge on Type 2 / Type 3 outlets in Europe.
It is made using a fully functional, original and brand new US Tesla connector.
We have integrated a battery in the connector so the radio signal for opening the chargeport also works.
Available in any length, charging power is 7.4 kW (32A)
Available with Type 2 or Type 3 plug.
We are also working on a US to type 2 adapter you can use on charging stations with type 2 cable attached… evchargeking.com/en/us-to-e … ging-cable
@NortonF1: these guys made an adapter for charging a European Model S in the US, but you would need the opposite for supercharging a US Tesla in Europe…
And finding a US supercharger plug is not that easy:-)
An official OK from Tesla? No, that will not happen soon
Tesla is a really tough company to deal with, we tried but concluded we are better off investing time in our cables then trying to deal with Tesla.
It are original Tesla plugs (no one else makes them), and the home chargers in the US also work on 240V, so that is no problem. And the protocol is universal (mode 3).
We developed the cable because we got 3 customer requests for a US to EU cable, so we thought it would help people that visit Europe in a US Tesla, or people who import a US Tesla in Europe…
We could also build a Supercharger adapter, but the problem is that we need the US Supercharger plugs, and unless you go to the US and cut them off, they are nowhere to be found…
On the other hand, Tesla could just block supercharging in Europe for US cars if they want to… Although I think they could be legally compelled to provide the service (possibly as a paid service)
There also seems the possibility to charge US models by using Chademo. If have driven a converted Model S at a dealer with Chademo connector about 1 year ago.
Yes, Chademo works well and retrofitting a Model S EU charge port isn’t too complicated also and even easier then changing the lights to operate correctly in EU. Just needs a bit of hardware and some minor software tweaks. Just did it yesterday in < 2h and we also had to solve other errors. Hardest part is getting the 2nd row seats out
One thing: if you only change the chargeport hardware you can install a type 2 socket, but you will only be able to charge single phase because the US versions charge only on a single phase…
If you want to charge 3-phase, you also need to swap out the chargers…
